Since Sunday, Jan. 14, Mount Mayon in Bicol, Albay, has been classified under a high level of unrest. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) released official information about the active volcano on Tuesday, Jan. 16. According to them, there is a newly formed lava dome around the volcano’s crater, and that lava started to flow down since Monday. The lava isn’t considered to have reached a dangerous volume yet, but Mount Mayon has also been emitting steam and ash.
Currently under alert level 3, Mount Mayon has a high possibility of explosion within the next few days or weeks. So far, there were nine tremors and 75 lava collapse that have been recorded with the recent volcanic activity. Evacuees have raised to a number of 38,771, and PHIVOLCS encourages residents living in the southern part of Mayon such as Legazpi City, Ligao City, Sto. Domingo, Daraga, and Camalig to remain vigilant for the possibility of evacuation.
The public has been prohibited to enter the 6-kilometre radius Permanent Damage Zone and 7-kilometre Extended Danger Zone, and aircrafts have been warned to avoid flying near the active volcano.
