Paoay Lake Is Now a Protected Area, Says President Marcos

Paoay Lake just earned national protection. President Marcos has signed a law declaring the famous lake in Ilocos Norte a protected area. This move puts its conservation front and centre.

The president has signed Republic Act 12230, making the famous lake a protected area. This new law was signed on 4 August 2025, and aims to protect, manage, and restore the lake's environment.

Why does this matter? Paoay Lake is known for its unique plants and animals that live only in this area. The law recognises the lake’s importance for both nature and the people. It is also part of a bigger government effort called the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS). This programme helps make sure that the country’s natural places are safe and well taken care of.

What Makes Paoay Lake Special?

Paoay Lake isn’t just a pretty tourist spot in Ilocos Norte. It’s one of the country’s most unique lakes. With no rivers flowing into it, the lake gets its water from rainfall and underground sources. It covers around 386 hectares and is home to different kinds of fish like tilapia and catfish, as well as water plants such as kangkong and water hyacinth. It also attracts many birds, including some that travel from other countries during migration season, like egrets and herons.

Unlike other lakes in the Philippines, Paoay Lake stands out because of its mix of biodiversity, tourism value, and importance to local communities. Lakes like Kayangan in Palawan are known for their crystal-clear waters. Lake Dapao in Mindanao is much deeper. But Paoay is known for its peaceful landscape, rich ecosystem, and historical surroundings. Many locals depend on it for small-scale fishing, while travellers enjoy nearby spots like the Malacañang of the North.

This is why the government decided to give it full legal protection. Paoay Lake’s natural environment, native species, and cultural value are at risk from pollution, overfishing, and unplanned development. By declaring it a protected area, the government aims to keep it clean, healthy, and sustainable for future generations.

A special team will manage the lake

To keep things organised and effective, the government will create a Protected Area Management Board. This team will be in charge of taking care of the lake. They will set policies, approve projects, and make sure all activities are safe for the environment.

The board will also work with local communities and Indigenous Peoples. They will create a management plan that matches the Ancestral Domain Sustainable Development and Protection Plan. This helps ensure that both nature and people benefit from the protection of Paoay Lake.

Protecting Paoay Lake is not just about the environment. It also opens opportunities for eco-tourism, education, and local jobs. If you’re someone who loves nature, this means cleaner, safer places to visit and learn from. It also shows that the Philippines is serious about saving natural treasures before it’s too late.

With the lake now protected by law, expect stricter rules, better conservation efforts, and more sustainable tourism in the area. Whether you're from Ilocos or just planning a trip, this move helps make sure the lake stays clean, safe, and worth visiting in the years to come.
