If you have ever driven across the iconic San Juanico Bridge connecting Samar and Leyte, you know just how stunning it is. Completed in 1973, it remains the third-longest bridge in the Philippines spanning a body of seawater. Despite its beauty, this famous landmark has been struggling to handle modern traffic demands.
Since May 2025, the original bridge has been limited to a three-ton load due to structural concerns. Larger vehicles, including buses and trucks, have had to take alternative routes, creating minor travel hassles for both locals and tourists. To address this, the government has allocated over ₱500 million for repairs, aiming to increase the bridge’s load capacity to 12 to 15 tons by December 2025.

The exciting news is that the Philippine government is now planning a second San Juanico Bridge, a 2.6-kilometre twin to the original. This new bridge is included in the Department of Public Works and Highways’ 881.3 billion peso 2026 budget, with 10 billion pesos earmarked under the 2026 National Expenditure Program.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said that the detailed engineering design is expected to be completed by 2026, with construction beginning immediately afterwards. The project is supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, ensuring that the bridge will meet international standards.

For travellers, this means smoother trips between Samar and Leyte, less congestion, and more opportunities to explore the region without worrying about traffic delays. For locals, it is a major boost for daily commuting and commerce, making life on both sides of the bridge easier.
