Imagine walking down the street and suddenly the ground just gives way. That’s what happened in Bangkok early Wednesday when a huge sinkhole swallowed part of a busy road, forcing people nearby to run and evacuate.
The collapse happened right outside Vajira Hospital and a local police station. A gaping hole, around 50 metres wide and dozens of metres deep, ripped open the road, pulling down power lines and exposing a water pipe that burst and started gushing.
Police and city officials immediately rushed to the site, setting up barriers while a pickup truck dangled dangerously at the edge of the sinkhole.

Bangkok’s disaster prevention head, Suriyachai Rawiwan, said the collapse was likely triggered by heavy rain and a leaking pipe that eroded the soil beneath the road. The water carried soil straight into an under-construction subway station below, causing the ground to cave in.
The good news? No casualties have been reported.
Bangkok is one of the most popular destinations for Pinoy travellers, whether it’s for food trips, shopping, or quick weekend getaways. But with this massive sinkhole happening right in the city, travellers heading to Thailand should expect possible traffic reroutes and delays around the hospital district.
