Brazil Hot Air Balloon Fire Kills 8 in Tragic Crash

You have probably seen hot air balloons floating peacefully over beautiful landscapes on social media. One of the top places to try this kind of adventure is Praia Grande in Brazil. It is often called the Brazilian Cappadocia because of its stunning canyons and colourful skies. But on 21 June 2025, a peaceful ride turned into a tragic accident when a hot air balloon caught fire shortly after take-off.

The balloon was carrying 21 people including the pilot. The fire reportedly started in the basket, possibly due to a backup burner failure. The pilot tried to make an emergency landing and told passengers to jump when it was close enough to the ground.

Eight people did not survive. Among the victims were doctors, teachers, and couples who were only hoping to enjoy a scenic view. Thirteen people managed to survive, including the pilot. Some jumped from the balloon while others stayed until it landed. This incident is now known as the most serious hot air balloon crash in Brazil’s history.
