The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has recently completed an extension of this stunning coastal road, offering travellers a new way to take in the beauty of Mayon Volcano while cruising along the picturesque shores of Barangay Alimsog, Sto. Domingo, Albay. This road upgrade, which was completed in April 2024 at a cost of ₱91.68 million, includes a 560-metre extension of the existing four-lane concrete road and a 100-metre protective seawall, ensuring a safe and smooth journey for both tourists and local residents.
According to DPWH Regional Director Virgilio C. Eduarte, the road not only improves access for those living in the previously isolated Barangay Alimsog but also creates a more scenic and adventurous travel option for visitors. Whether you’re driving or biking, the breathtaking views of Mayon against the backdrop of the sea make this route a must-visit for those looking for a more immersive experience of Albay’s natural beauty.
But the Buhatan-Alimsog Road isn't the only scenic route offering breathtaking views of Mayon. Travellers seeking more panoramic vistas can explore several other roads in Albay that highlight the volcano’s grandeur. For instance, the Legazpi City-Daraga Road offers stunning views as you approach the historic Daraga Church, a popular tourist destination in itself. Meanwhile, the Sumlang Lake Road provides a reflective, dramatic view of Mayon, as the volcano is mirrored in the lake's tranquil waters — a photographer’s dream.
If you’re up for a bit more adventure, the Tabaco City-Mayon Road takes you even closer to the base of Mayon, offering various angles of the volcano’s imposing silhouette. Finally, the Camalig Bypass Road offers a panoramic perspective that frames Mayon beautifully, especially during sunset.
