What was meant to be a vibrant celebration of Filipino culture at the Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver, Canada, quickly became a heart-wrenching tragedy.
The event, honouring Lapu-Lapu, the Filipino hero who defeated Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, began with the usual festivities — colourful parades, lively dances, and delicious food. Families and community members gathered to celebrate their heritage, sharing performances and unity.
However, the celebration was abruptly interrupted by a devastating event that left the Filipino community in shock.

On the morning of April 27, 2025 (Philippine Time), as the celebration continued, a 30-year-old man drove his black Audi SUV into the crowd at the Sunset on Fraser neighbourhood. What was once a festive gathering of people now became a scene of chaos and heartbreak. The tragic attack killed at least 11 individuals, including many innocent bystanders, and left several others injured.
Eyewitnesses described the horror of seeing children and adults lying on the ground, with emergency responders rushing to help. The suspect, known to have struggled with mental health issues, deliberately rammed into the crowd, although authorities ruled out terrorism. This senseless act cast a shadow over the festival, turning what was meant to be a celebration of Filipino strength into a national tragedy.

Despite the overwhelming grief, the Filipino community in Vancouver has shown remarkable resilience in the face of this tragedy. Filipino BC, the community group behind the event, expressed their sorrow while emphasising Bayanihan — a Filipino value of solidarity in times of hardship. This tragic event serves as a reminder that the Filipino spirit remains unbroken, even amidst such a heartbreaking incident.
The Philippine government and the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver have pledged their full support to the victims and their families, working closely with Canadian authorities to ensure justice is served. They have also extended their help to those affected, promising to stand by the community as they grieve and heal.
