What happens when a winter attraction melts under scrutiny?
Winter travel destinations are always a hit, especially for those who have never seen snow before. There’s something magical about stepping into a snowy landscape, bundled up in warm clothes, ready to experience the crisp, chilly air. That’s why many travellers are willing to go the extra mile—literally—to visit places that promise an enchanting winter wonderland. But what happens when that dream turns out to be nothing more than a well-crafted illusion?

Chengdu’s Snow Village in China is closing its doors—at least for now. The popular attraction, which promised visitors a dreamy winter wonderland, faced massive backlash after tourists discovered that its “snow” was nothing more than cotton wool and soap bubbles. Now, the management has announced a temporary shutdown for “rectification.” But the real question is: will this attraction ever recover?

The Snow Village, located in Sichuan province, was marketed as the perfect escape for those craving a snowy adventure. For many Filipino travellers, China’s winter destinations offer a chance to experience something we don’t get at home—real snow. But instead of the soft, powdery landscapes visitors expected, they found themselves in what felt more like a staged photoshoot. Some areas were even covered with white bedsheets to create the illusion of snow, leading to frustration and viral social media posts exposing the deception.

Tourists who had travelled long distances to see the winter spectacle felt misled. “I feel cheated. My intelligence has been insulted,” one visitor complained online. The backlash was so intense that management had no choice but to apologise publicly and offer refunds to disappointed guests. The attraction has since been shut down, with officials saying they need time to reassess and make improvements.
But can a place like this bounce back?

Climate change is making it harder for seasonal destinations to maintain their appeal. In warmer winters, places that usually rely on natural snowfall are turning to artificial solutions. Some resorts invest in high-tech snow machines, but Chengdu’s Snow Village took a much cheaper and riskier route. Their attempt to fake a winter experience may have been meant to keep visitors happy, but it backfired spectacularly.

For Filipino travellers who dream of experiencing winter abroad, this serves as a reminder to always do some research before booking. Checking recent reviews, looking at visitor photos, and even monitoring local weather reports can save you from falling into a similar trap. After all, there’s nothing worse than spending money on a trip only to find out the main attraction is... well, fake.

That said, the idea of a snow village in a region that doesn’t usually get snow isn’t a bad one. If done properly and honestly, it could still be a fun experience. But transparency is key—travellers deserve to know what they’re paying for. Whether Chengdu’s Snow Village will make a comeback remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: next time, they’ll have to do better than cotton wool and soap bubbles.
So, if you ever visit a snow attraction and something feels off? Maybe give it a poke—just to be sure.
