This Coconut Vending Machine in Taiwan Dispenses Fresh Cocowater

For a tool first invented to dispense Holy Water, the vending machine has undoubtedly evolved since the first century AD. Now, we see them everywhere for everything: in snack bars for bottled juices and soft drinks, in bathrooms for napkins and tissue papers, and — our latest find — in Taiwan, for fresh coconut water.

You read that right: Coconut vending machines are a thing!

How the coconut vending machine works

Across Taiwan, you can find coconut vending machines that dispense actual fresh coconuts. After you insert money (one coconut costs US$2.25 or ₱114.81 each), the device will drill a straw-sized hole into the fruit before releasing it. Then, you can enjoy a chilled coconut drink straight out of its shell. Isn’t that cool? It’s an eco-friendly alternative to regular vendo beverages, too. Just remember to bring a reusable straw with you!

While primarily found in Taiwan, the coconut vending machine has also found its way to various destinations, including China, Singapore, and Thailand. Fingers crossed, they’ll someday land in the Philippines soon (for a lot cheaper, please)!

These squeeze oranges upon taking your payment, so you’re treated to the freshest cup of juice possible. Taiwan even has vending machines for surgical face masks — a must during the pandemic!
