Commuters in Metro Manila can enjoy free MRT and LRT rides today, Monday, 22 Dec 2025, as the Department of Transportation extends complimentary train services to members of the LGBTQIA+ community and solo parents.
The free ride programme is part of the DOTr’s 12 Days of Christmas initiative, running from 14 Dec to 25 Dec. Each day of the programme is dedicated to a specific sector, and today highlights inclusion and support for LGBTQIA+ commuters and solo parents during the busy holiday season.
The following groups are entitled to free MRT and LRT rides today:
Members of the LGBTQIA+ community
Solo parents
LGBTQIA+ commuters:
No identification or documentation is required.
Commuters simply need to self-identify as LGBTQIA+.
The programme is based on honest self-identification, as a gesture of inclusion and recognition for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Solo parents:
Solo parents may bring their official solo parent ID if they have one.
Transport personnel are instructed to handle the benefit with sensitivity and flexibility, ensuring that solo parents can ride without unnecessary inconvenience.
This approach ensures the initiative remains inclusive, respectful, and accessible for its intended beneficiaries.
As of today, the DOTr has not announced any specific time restrictions for the free rides. All official advisories only mention the date, which strongly suggests that the free rides apply for the entire operating hours of the MRT and LRT lines.
Eligible commuters can ride for free from the first train service in the morning until the last train tonight, unless an updated advisory is issued. Commuters are encouraged to check official DOTr announcements and station notices for any last-minute updates.
The free ride benefit today covers the following rail lines across Metro Manila:
MRT 3
LRT 1
LRT 2
All stations along these lines are included, allowing commuters to travel across key routes in the metro without paying train fares today.
With free rides available throughout the day, higher passenger volume is expected, especially during morning and evening rush hours. Commuters are advised to allot extra travel time, follow station rules, and remain considerate of fellow passengers.
There is no need to buy special tickets or load a beep card for eligible commuters. Station staff are deployed across stations to assist passengers and ensure smooth operations throughout the day.
Beyond fare savings, today’s free ride initiative highlights the role of public transport as a shared space built on respect, dignity, and inclusion. For LGBTQIA+ commuters, the absence of required documentation reinforces respect for personal identity. For solo parents, the programme offers both financial relief and recognition during a season that often comes with added responsibilities.
As trains continue to operate today, the free rides serve as a reminder that everyday commutes can reflect social values. For those taking advantage of the free MRT and LRT rides today, travelling early, staying patient, and being mindful of others will help ensure a smoother experience for everyone.
