Here is some good news for commuters in Metro Manila. If you have a Philippine National ID, you can enjoy free rides on the MRT 3 every Wednesday this August 2025. This initiative is part of a partnership between the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), aiming to promote the use of the national ID and give a small break to everyday passengers.

The free rides are offered on four specific dates. These are 6, 13, 20, and 27 August. However, the free trips are only available during peak travel hours. You can ride for free between 9 in the morning and 11 before lunch, and again from 6 in the evening until 8 at night. It is a practical option for those commuting to work or heading home after a long day.
As long as you are registered in the national ID system, you are eligible. You only need to show proof of registration. This can be your physical PhilID card, a printed ePhilID, or even the digital version from the official PhilSys app. No extra forms or special passes are needed. Just show your valid ID and you are good to go.

The main goal is to raise awareness and encourage more Filipinos to use the national ID in everyday situations. The PSA and DOTr are highlighting how the PhilSys ID can be useful in different parts of life, including public transport. It is also a way to give commuters a small boost, especially as transport expenses continue to add up.

The MRT 3 runs along EDSA, covering key areas from North Avenue in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City. It passes through important business and shopping districts including Cubao, Ortigas, and Makati. This makes it a convenient route for work, errands, or simply getting around the metro without having to deal with traffic.

Free rides may not solve every commuter’s problem, but they can definitely help. If you already have your national ID, take advantage of this offer while it is available. If you haven’t registered yet, this could be a sign to start. More benefits are being linked to the PhilSys ID, so having one is becoming more useful with time.
Mark your Wednesdays and bring your ID. It is one less thing to worry about while moving around Metro Manila.
