The Philippines is soaring high in the world of eco-friendly travel! Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), the main gateway to the beautiful Visayas region, has been recognized for its dedication to sustainability. This prestigious award places MCIA at the forefront of green airports in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East.

The recognition comes from the Airports Council International (ACI), a group representing airport operators across the region. This year’s Green Airports Recognition specifically focused on airports that prioritised “Biodiversity and Nature-Based Solutions.” MCIA’s commitment to this approach impressed the judges, leading them to award the coveted Platinum distinction.
The competition was fierce, with MCIA competing in the 8-15 million passenger category. However, their green initiatives surpassed those of other contenders, including the King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia (Gold) and Japan‘s Chubu Centrair International Airport (Silver).
So, what exactly is earning MCIA all this praise? The airport, operated by Aboitiz GMCAC (GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation), has implemented several key eco-friendly practices. These include utilising solar power to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and maintaining green spaces within the airport grounds. MCIA CEO Athanasios Titonis emphasises the importance of these efforts, stating that “minimising our carbon footprint” is crucial within the aviation industry.

This recognition isn’t MCIA’s first brush with sustainability awards. The airport recently became the first in the Philippines to achieve Level 1 Airport Carbon Accreditation, highlighting its commitment to managing and reporting its carbon emissions. Furthermore, MCIA underwent a stunning P1.8-billion renovation, resulting in a visually impressive terminal that prioritises both style and environmental responsibility.

So, the next time you plan a trip to Cebu, you can fly into MCIA knowing you’re supporting a green champion!
