Coffee date on the mountains, anyone?

If you can’t make it to the Swiss Alps yet, maybe you should try visiting this one in Asia first. Kamikochi in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture looks straight out of a postcard, with snow-capped peaks, icy blue rivers, and crisp mountain air that makes you forget you ever had deadlines.
Located inside the Chubu Sangaku National Park, this mountain resort stays cool even during Japan’s hottest months. It’s one of those rare places where you can go hiking, sightseeing, and soul-searching all in one trip.
Getting there isn’t as simple as hopping on a train… but that’s exactly what keeps Kamikochi peaceful and uncrowded, which we all love, especially if you’re someone who actually wants to travel to unwind! If you’re looking for fresh air, alpine views, and a real nature break, this guide covers everything you need to know before your trip.

Here’s the catch: Kamikochi isn’t open year-round. It only welcomes visitors from mid-April to mid-November, and private cars are not allowed inside. But getting there is part of the real adventure.
Your transport options:
Private car + bus or taxi. Drive to Sawando Parking (if coming from Matsumoto) or Hirayu Parking (if from Takayama). From there, take a bus or taxi to Kamikochi. Parking costs around ¥800 (₱300) for the day, and a roundtrip bus ticket is about ¥2,800 (₱1,035). Note: Prices are based on recent estimates and may have already changed due to seasonal adjustments or updated local rates.
Public bus. Direct routes are available from Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Matsumoto, or Takayama. These require advance booking.
By bike. Cyclists can freely enter Kamikochi.
Tip: Go early, especially during long weekends. Parking areas fill up fast by 9 AM.

You can visit Kamikochi as a day trip, but if you want to truly enjoy the peace and mountain views, stay overnight.
Where to stay. Kamikochi Lemeiesta Hotel or Hotel Shirakabaso near Kappa Bridge are top picks.
Camping. You can also bring your own tent and camp.
Meals. Few restaurants serve dinner, so book a room with meals included or bring your own food.
Baggage. You can store your luggage at the Kamikochi Bus Terminal. Some hotels even offer luggage delivery services.
Bear alert! Bears are known to roam the area. Walk in groups and use the bear bells along the trail for safety.

The most popular thing to do in Kamikochi is walk the main nature trail, which loops around Taisho Pond, Kappa Bridge, and Myojin Pond.
Here’s what it’s like:
Start at Taisho Pond, where the mountains and sky reflect beautifully on the clear water.
Pass Mt. Yakedake, a volcano that formed Taisho Pond after its 1915 eruption.
Cross Tashiro Bridge over the Azusa River and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife.
Stop at Kappa Bridge, Kamikochi’s most iconic spot, surrounded by cafes and souvenir shops.
Have lunch at La Belle Foret, a restaurant known for its Shinshu beef dishes.
Continue walking to Hotaka Shrine and Myojin Ponds. Entry costs ¥500 (₱185), and the views are worth every yen.
Cross the swinging Myojin Bridge before heading back to Kappa Bridge.
The walk takes around five hours, including photo breaks and lunch. The route is mostly flat, but wear comfortable walking shoes.
Note: Prices are based on recent estimates and may have already changed due to seasonal adjustments or updated local rates.
