Ever heard of a courtship dance turned grand festival? If you're looking for something unique to experience in Cebu, the Kuyayang Festival in Bogo City might just be your next cultural trip. Every 26th of May, this small city in northern Cebu comes alive with colourful street dances, nostalgic traditions, and the infectious joy of the Kuyayang—a traditional Bisaya courtship dance that’s now a full-blown celebration of Bogo's roots.

Kuyayang Festival is more than just costumes and performances. It celebrates Bogo City’s patron saint, St. Vincent Ferrer, while putting the spotlight on a dance that has been part of the community for generations. The Kuyayang itself is playful and expressive—full of graceful hand gestures and subtle flirtation. Locals say it’s inspired by the slow, swaying movements of an insect larva (also called kuyayang in Bisaya). Sounds unusual, but it perfectly fits the theme of traditional courtship!
The festival is a celebration of love, dance, and community—the kind you don’t often find in bigger, more commercialised fiestas.

The Kuyayang Festival actually traces its roots back to the 1960s, but it took a backseat for a while. It wasn’t until 2023 that Bogo City decided to bring it back with a bang. Since then, the festival has become an important cultural highlight every May, attracting both locals and curious travellers looking for something off the beaten path.

Expect a city bursting with life. During the festival week, Bogo's streets are filled with:
Elaborate street dancing by contingents from different barangays
Floats decorated with local produce and traditional symbols
A ritual showdown where each group showcases their best Kuyayang choreography
Warm welcomes from locals who are proud of their city’s history and traditions
In 2023 alone, 14 performance groups joined the festivities—proof of how deeply the community supports and enjoys this event. The energy is infectious, and whether you’re a culture buff or a casual traveller, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement.
The city government allocates ₱3 to ₱4 million yearly to support the festival, including cash prizes and subsidies for performers. While that doesn’t directly affect tourists, it means the festival is well-organised and worth the trip. You won’t need to spend much either—Bogo remains affordable, from food to transport and lodging.
Ride a bus from Cebu North Bus Terminal headed to Bogo City. Travel time is around 3–4 hours.
There are several Airbnbs, inns, and budget hotels around the city, so it’s easy to plan an overnight stay.

What makes Kuyayang Festival different? It’s local, heartfelt, and full of character. You won’t find flashy celebrities or huge production numbers here—but you will discover heartfelt performances, community spirit, and a chance to see Cebuano culture in its most authentic form.
If you're looking to explore more of Cebu beyond the beaches, Kuyayang Festival offers a perfect blend of culture, history, and fun—without the crowds you'd usually find in bigger festivals like Sinulog.
