If you are a student who takes the LRT or MRT regularly, here is some great news. Starting 20 June 2025, the Philippine government is introducing a bigger fare discount for students. You can now enjoy 50 percent off your rides on LRT Line 1, LRT Line 2, and MRT Line 3.
This is a big jump from the previous 20 percent discount. The Department of Transportation made this move to help ease the daily cost of commuting for students. With transport expenses on the rise, this change is a welcome relief.

The new 50 percent discount applies only to single journey tickets bought directly at the station counters. If you are used to using a Beep card or any stored value card, those will not work with this discount. You will need to buy your ticket at the counter and present your valid student ID.
It may take a little more time, especially during peak hours, so it is best to plan ahead. The extra effort is worth it when you consider how much you will be saving.

Whether you are in elementary school, high school, university, or taking postgraduate studies, you are qualified to receive the discount. The important thing is that you must present a valid student ID for the current academic year or term.
The best part is that the discount is available every day. That includes weekdays, weekends, and even holidays. Whether you are going to class, meeting your groupmates for a project, or heading out for some downtime, you can still enjoy the half-price fare.
Let’s face it, commuting in Metro Manila can be challenging. Between the traffic, heat, and daily expenses, it is tough to stay on top of your routine. For many students, even small savings can make a difference.
If your daily round-trip commute normally costs ₱30, that drops to just ₱15 with the new discount. In a month, you could save around ₱300 or more. That extra money could go toward school supplies, snacks, or even a weekend treat with friends.

Always carry your student ID with you. No ID means no discount. If you do not have your ID yet, you may show proof of current enrolment such as a registration form or enrolment slip issued by your school.
Buy your ticket at the station counter and avoid using stored value cards like Beep cards, as the discount only applies to single journey tickets bought over the counter.
If you are commuting with friends, take turns queueing so everyone saves time. Just make sure each person has their valid student ID or proof of enrolment ready.
Arrive a bit earlier than usual if you are travelling during rush hour, since ticket queues can get long.

This fare discount is more than just a price cut. It shows that the government is taking steps to support students who rely on public transport. It is a practical way to help make education and mobility more accessible across Metro Manila.
So whether you are heading to your university in Quezon City, your review centre in Manila, or your internship in Makati, you can now get there for half the usual fare. Just bring your ID and buy your ticket over the counter.
