There are many other beautiful places in the Philippines outside its capital, but these 5 destinations will let you enjoy weekend trips with great ease.

The Philippine government has firmly rejected recent claims made by Chinese scholars suggesting that Batanes belongs to China through Taiwan, stressing that Philippine sovereignty over the country's northernmost province is "settled and not up for debate."
The remarks came after a symposium held in China, where several scholars reportedly argued that Batanes is a natural geographical extension of Taiwan and therefore part of China. However, Beijing has not officially adopted or endorsed these claims.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) rejected the assertions, saying the Philippines will not entertain revisionist claims over its territory. The agency also pointed out that China's own consular arrangements recognise Batanes as part of the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. described the claims as "baseless," "nonsense," and "ludicrous," adding that such statements should not go unchallenged. He also expressed concern that the narrative could signal broader strategic intentions in the region.

Located about 160 kilometres south of Taiwan, Batanes sits along the Luzon Strait, one of the region's most important sea passages connecting the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
Because of its strategic location, the province has become increasingly significant in regional security planning and has previously hosted joint military exercises involving the Philippines and its allies.
The issue also comes amid continuing tensions between Manila and Beijing over maritime disputes in the West Philippine Sea and ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 2016 arbitral ruling, which invalidated China's sweeping claims in the South China Sea.
At present, there are no travel restrictions or advisories affecting tourism in Batanes related to these developments. Flights, tours, and local tourism activities continue as normal, allowing visitors to explore the province's rolling hills, traditional Ivatan villages, dramatic coastlines, and iconic lighthouses.
As always, travellers are encouraged to monitor official government travel advisories and airline announcements when planning their trip to Batanes.
