It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas everywhere you go — and it’s not just because Michael Bublé says so. In line with the spirit of giving, many of us have begun brainstorming for Christmas gift ideas. And, after a year of struggles and sacrifice, we should remember to treat ourselves as well. If you’re a jetsetter, there’s no doubt that you’ve thought of rewarding yourself with the gift of travel. Now the million dollar question is: should you really?

When you should

1. You want to learn something new

Stuck in a rut because of your monotonous routine? Travelling would do wonders if you’re looking for a fresh start for the new year. It allows you to grow and see life from a new perspective. When you observe different cultures, you’ll definitely be able to learn a thing or two. Who knows? You might even discover a Christmas tradition you’ve never heard about! Once you embrace these learnings, your life will never seem the same again.

2. You’re craving for adventure

Unlike those who save up for tangible things, you’d rather invest on new experiences. A dose of adventure will certainly fire up your endorphins, and honestly, nothing is as good as feeling happy and excited.

3. You need a serious break

Sometimes, the only way you can really spend the yuletide season restfully is when you travel far, far away from all your day-to-day stresses. Literally. If you’ve been too caught up in work the past year, now might be the perfect time to leave everything and go!

4. You want to meet new friends

Hubert Humphrey once said, “The greatest gift of life is friendship…” If you agree with him, then you should try travelling for the holidays. Out of your comfort zone, you’ll meet amazing people who’ll surprise you. If you’re lucky, you might even find some meaningful friendships to last a lifetime!

Tip: If you want to meet new friends, try staying in a busy hostel. Most likely, your roommates are looking to meet new friends too! You might even end up celebrating the holidays together.

5. You’re looking for a bigger purpose

Many times, you’ve felt burnt out and stuck. You couldn’t see past your short-term goals. Maybe your mind has been clouded by the limited space you have to grow. If this is so, try spreading your wings and fly — to another country! Who knows what valuable and purposeful insight you might get?

What you should consider

1. Family

Holidays are usually meant for family reunions. Are you sure you’d want to spend Christmas without them? Homesickness is a real struggle, and it hits even the best of us sometimes. This season may make you even lonelier when you decide to be away from your family. Oh, and think about the guilt trip from your relatives you’ll probably have to suffer for the next Christmases to come if you decide to skip this year’s annual family gathering. Doesn’t sound too good, does it?

2. Crowds

Family reunions also mean balikbayans crowding up the airports with tons of pasalubong. It’s usually either that or huge family trips abroad. Basically, almost every tourist spot would be full during the holidays. It’s guaranteed. If you can’t deal with long queues or crowded spaces, you might want to rethink your holiday travel.

3. Budget

It’s peak travel season, so prices will definitely soar higher than usual. Are you ready to pay unreasonable amounts of cash this month?

Tip: Look out for holiday discounts. You might actually be able to save more.

4. Work

This shouldn’t be a problem, unless your work revolves around the tourism industry. Or if you’ve used up all your leaves. As much as we love the idea of travel is life, it just won’t happen if you forego the job that actually pays for your trip.

5. Safety

Sadly, some people use the holiday cheer to take advantage of travellers. In fact, some tourist-friendly countries are reportedly more prone to terrorism during the holidays. Burglars are often on the lookout for empty homes during holidays. It would be wise to hold your travel itinerary from the public, just to be safe!

Remember, Christmas is a season of love, and whether that means staying at home with your family or doing the thing you love the most, it’s important that you ultimately fill your heart with what makes you happy.
