US Visa Interview Waivers for Some Filipinos Narrow Starting September 2

Some non-immigrant visa applicants for the United States may soon renew without an in-person interview. Starting 2 September 2025, only select categories, including certain diplomatic visa holders and specific B-1/B-2 renewals that meet strict criteria, will remain eligible for the waiver, according to the U.S. State Department.

Under the updated guidelines, most non-immigrant visa applicants must appear before a consular officer. However, interview waivers remain for:

  • Applicants at least 18 years old when their prior B-1 (business), B-2 (tourist), B-1/B-2 (business/tourist) visa or Border Crossing Card was issued.

  • Renewals for the same visa category, filed no earlier than 12 months before expiry, when the prior visa was issued for full validity.

  • Holders of diplomatic or official-type visas.

  • Holders of special visa types: A-1, A-2, NATO, TECRO, and certain C-3 and G visas.

Extra embassy conditions for the waiver:

  • Your previous visa is still valid or expired less than 12 months ago.

  • You have never been refused a U.S. visa.

  • You are a citizen or resident of the Philippines, physically in the country at the time of renewal.

  • You have never been arrested anywhere in the world.

  • Your prior visa has no annotations such as “Clearance Received” or “Waiver Granted.”

If you’re unsure about your visa type or expiry date, check your passport visa stamp or your last U.S. visa approval notice.

The U.S. requires interviews to screen applicants and prevent fraud. But with demand soaring, especially from the Philippines, backlogs have left some waiting months for a slot. By limiting waivers to low-risk applicants, consular officers can focus on first-timers while still easing queues for qualified renewals.

What this means for Filipino travellers

For frequent Filipino visitors to the US, this is good news. Those with a clean travel record can renew without taking time off work, queuing at the embassy, or facing interview questions. This can make it easier to plan trips for family reunions, holidays, or business meetings, especially when grabbing airfare promos or booking time-sensitive tour packages.

However, for first-time applicants and those with past visa issues will still need to face the consular interview.
