Japan isn’t just about sushi, ramen, or towering skyscrapers. Step into any konbini, Japan’s convenience stores, and you will see shelves full of snacks, drinks and ready-to-eat meals. The word “konbini” comes from the English word “convenience,” because these shops are open all day and night, making it easy to buy almost anything. For Filipino travellers, konbini are a cheap and easy way to try authentic Japanese snacks that you cannot find anywhere else.
From soft banana sponge cakes to crunchy rice crackers and delicate butter cookies, each snack is a visual and tasty delight. For Filipino travellers, konbini offers a convenient and budget-friendly way to taste authentic Japanese flavours while exploring cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Here are eight Japanese snacks you can only get in Japan!

Soft sponge cake filled with creamy banana custard. Often shaped like cute animals or themed for special occasions, each piece is individually wrapped. You can easily pick up Tokyo Banana at a konbini near Tokyo Station, and there are plenty of hotels nearby if you want to stay in the city centre.

If you’re a snacker at heart, you would love Japanese konbinis! It’s filled with various snack options that you will not find in your local 7-eleven or Lawson stores. Plus, the food is actually good, fresh, and does not taste like it has been stored there for years. Another good thing about konbinis in Japan is that their government has higher standards for food and drugs being sold in public. With that said, you can make sure that what you’re getting from konbinis are not just delicious but also clean and safe!
