Arrival day is often the most exhausting part of any trip. After hours on a plane, no one wants to queue up for immigration and fill out endless forms. Thankfully, Japan has just made this process a whole lot easier, especially for those entering through Haneda, Narita, and Kansai airports.
Japan now has a streamlined immigration system via the Visit Japan Web. Travellers can register online before flying and receive a QR code for automated airport kiosks. No paper forms or manual stamps, just scan, do a quick biometric check, and proceed. Even customs offer an express lane for registered passengers.
The new system is already up and running in:
Haneda Airport: Terminals 2 and 3
Narita Airport: Terminal 3
Kansai Airport: Terminals 1 and 2
It’s worth noting that more airports are expected to adopt the system shortly, but for now, if you’re flying into Tokyo or Osaka, you’ll be among the first to benefit from this change. Just remember to sign up at Visit Japan Web before your trip.

If your trip includes a stop in Osaka, you’ll likely fly through Kansai International Airport, and you’re in for a treat. Terminal 1 has recently completed a massive renovation that has transformed the travel experience.
Everything now feels more spacious, modern, and efficient. Immigration and security are centralised in one zone, cutting down walking time and confusion. Automated passport gates speed up the process even more. After clearing security, you’ll pass through a sleek new duty-free shopping area, featuring local snacks, beauty products, and high-end goods.
The terminal is also divided into four themed retail zones, each with a distinct vibe. And when it’s time to eat, you’ll have your pick of local Japanese favourites like tempura, takoyaki, and ramen, alongside a few global options.
Navigating the terminal is much easier now, thanks to clear English signage and an intuitive floor plan:
4th Floor: Check-in counters
3rd Floor: Immigration and security
2nd Floor: Boarding gates, shopping, dining
1st Floor: Arrivals and baggage claim
Plus, the airport now offers duty-free on arrival, so if you missed out on souvenirs, you can still do some last-minute shopping.
