US To Test New System That Could Help Reduce Flight Delays

Flying in the US could eventually become more predictable as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prepares to test a new system designed to help reduce flight delays and air traffic congestion.

The new technology, called Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories (SMART), is being developed as part of the FAA’s broader effort to modernise how flights are managed across the US.

Unlike systems that primarily respond to congestion after it develops, SMART is designed to help identify potential bottlenecks in advance and coordinate flights before they take off.

How will the new system work?

SMART will be part of the FAA’s new Flow Management Data and Services (FMDS) platform.

The system will bring together information including flight plans, airline schedules, real-time aircraft positions and weather conditions. It can then use this information to forecast where congestion could occur hours ahead.

This could allow air traffic managers to make adjustments earlier, including coordinating flight schedules and routes to help prevent congestion from building up.

For travellers, the goal is simple: fewer delays and more predictable journeys.

Why does this matter for travellers?

Flight delays in the US can have a knock-on effect, particularly for passengers with connecting flights.

A delay at one airport or along a busy airspace route can affect later flights, potentially resulting in missed connections and longer waiting times.

The FAA says FMDS is designed to use predictive intelligence to optimise traffic patterns and support faster rerouting around weather systems.

This could be especially useful during periods of bad weather or heavy air traffic, when airports and airspace can become congested.

When will the new system be tested?

The FAA awarded a contract to Air Space Intelligence in June 2026 to develop and deploy FMDS and SMART.

The new platform is part of the agency’s wider modernisation programme for the US air traffic control system.

SMART is expected to be tested as the FAA moves towards deploying the new technology across its air traffic management operations.

Will this eliminate flight delays?

Not completely.

Even with improved technology, flights can still be delayed by severe weather, aircraft maintenance, airport issues, staffing and other unexpected situations.

Instead, SMART is intended to help air traffic managers spot potential problems earlier and respond before congestion becomes worse.

The FAA's existing air traffic management upgrades also aim to improve schedule predictability and reduce delays by making better use of available airport and airspace capacity.

What Filipino travellers should know

If you're planning to travel to the US, you shouldn't expect immediate changes to your flight experience. The new system is still part of a longer-term air traffic control modernisation programme.

However, it could eventually benefit travellers flying through busy US airports, particularly those taking connecting flights between cities.

For now, it is still important to leave enough time between connecting flights and check your airline's flight status before travelling.

If successfully implemented, the technology could help make the US aviation network more efficient by predicting congestion instead of waiting for delays to happen first.
