Why You Have to Try Listening to 8D Music on YouTube

It’s probably been about two years since my younger (read: Gen Z) brother asked me to put on my earphones and listen to an 8D track. It was the first time I’d ever heard of 8D music, and it just seemed completely sketchy. “What is this?” I asked my brother before consenting to listen. “Just listen to it,” he said.“This better not be weird,” I thought to myself. I proceeded to put on my earphones, and — wow.

Fast forward to today, and I’m surprised that a lot of people still haven’t heard of 8D music. If some of you use YouTube as your main source of music content, then perhaps you’ve at least scrolled past titles that scream “8D AUDIO” and “LISTEN WITH HEADPHONES.” Well, let me give you a little push: It’s time you clicked on one of those videos!

So, what exactly is 8D music?

It’s nothing sketchy — not at all. To put it simply, 8D music is achieved with the help of post-production special effects and editing. A “panning” effect will let the music travel from side to side (hence the need for earphones), and will make you feel as though it’s literally moving in circles around you. Editors also add a reverb effect to the pre-existing track, which allows 8D music to replicate a live concert-quality audio experience.

It’s quite a mind-blowing sensory experience, and given the times we live in, it will easily get you nostalgic for the good old days. I mean, when was the last time you got to attend a concert that wasn’t online? Additionally, it’s an excellent way to imagine what it’s like hearing your favourite artists live, if you haven’t yet.

But all this talk inside, the best way to learn about 8D music is to listen to it yourself! Spoiler alert: It’ll allow you to fully experience a song rather than just hear it. It’s almost trippy, but in the best way possible. Check out these videos below, or simply search for an 8D version of one of your favourite songs. Just don’t forget to put on your earphones — it’s a must.
