A 21 year old woman in Brazil has died after taking part in an extreme rope jumping activity where her safety equipment was not attached before the jump, according to police investigators. The tragic incident has sparked renewed discussions about safety standards in adventure tourism and the precautions travellers should take before signing up for high risk activities.
The victim, identified by local media as Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, was participating in a rope jumping experience at the Ponte do Esqueleto (Skeleton Bridge) in Limeira, São Paulo state. Reports say she fell around 40 metres (about 130 feet) after being launched from the bridge without being connected to the required safety rope. Authorities confirmed that the equipment had not been secured at the time of the jump.
Videos circulating online show the moments before the accident, with onlookers reportedly realising too late that no safety cord had been attached. Witnesses can be heard shouting warnings as the jump takes place.
Police in Brazil have arrested several people connected to the operation while investigations continue. According to investigators, the instructors involved admitted that the participant was not connected to the safety ropes, although they reportedly could not determine who was responsible for the final equipment check.
The incident has also drawn attention to the location itself. Skeleton Bridge is an abandoned railway structure that has become known for extreme sports activities despite concerns about safety and oversight. Local authorities have since announced plans to increase security measures around the site.

Adventure activities such as bungee jumping, rope jumping, skydiving and ziplining remain popular around the world, but safety experts recommend taking a few extra steps before participating.
Travellers should look for licensed operators, ask about safety procedures, check online reviews, and pay close attention during equipment checks. It is also important to visually confirm that harnesses, ropes and safety gear are properly attached before starting any activity.
Many experienced adventure operators follow a double check system, where multiple staff members inspect equipment before a participant takes part. If you feel rushed or uncomfortable at any point, it is always okay to ask questions or stop the activity altogether.
While accidents involving adventure tourism are rare, this heartbreaking case serves as a reminder that safety checks matter and that even a small oversight can have devastating consequences.
As investigations continue in Brazil, many travellers online are reflecting on how quickly an exciting adventure can turn into tragedy when safety procedures are not followed.
