The Philippines has once again captured the global spotlight with nominations in the 2024 Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards, a prestigious recognition that highlights the world’s top travel destinations. Organised by the UK-based Wanderlust magazine, the awards invite the travel community to recognize the best in travel, and this year, the Philippines is in the running in three significant categories. With its vibrant culture, natural wonders, and unique heritage, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is calling on locals and international supporters to help the Philippines secure top honours.

The Philippines itself has been shortlisted in the “Most Desirable Country (Rest of the World)” category, marking its place as a sought-after destination among international travellers. Additionally, the country’s scenic region of Cebu and the renowned island of Palawan have been nominated in individual categories. Cebu, celebrated for its pristine beaches, rich heritage sites, and lively festivals, is competing for the “Most Desirable Region (Rest of the World)” title. This is Cebu’s second consecutive nomination in the awards, having narrowly lost to Cuba last year.
Palawan, famous for its breathtaking UNESCO-listed sites, lush forests, and dramatic limestone cliffs, is also up for a significant accolade as it vies for “Most Desirable Island (Rest of the World).” Known for its natural beauty and thriving marine life, Palawan has long attracted tourists seeking adventure and serenity, making it a strong contender in the category.
Beyond these main nominations, the DOT is encouraging fans of the Philippines to support the country across several subcategories. Voters can endorse the Philippines in categories such as “Adventure, Nature, and Wildlife”; “Culture and Heritage”; and “Gastronomy and Sustainability” by writing in its name under “others.” This multi-category approach highlights the Philippines’ diversity, catering to those interested in unique wildlife encounters, rich cultural history, and sustainable culinary experiences.
With its diverse nominations, the DOT remains optimistic that the Philippines has a solid chance of claiming top spots in multiple categories. “This is an opportunity for everyone who’s been touched by the beauty and warmth of the Philippines to help us bring home these awards,” said a DOT spokesperson. By rallying support from both locals and international fans, the DOT hopes to elevate the Philippines on the global stage, spotlighting its natural and cultural wonders.
