Falling Debris Warning Issued Over Palawan After Explosive China Rocket Launch

Stay alert for falling space junk! The Philippine government is warning people in southern Palawan to be extra cautious after debris from a Chinese rocket fell into nearby waters on Sunday, August 4. Authorities say more fragments could still fall in the area.

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) confirmed that China launched its Long March 12 rocket from Hainan Island. Right after liftoff, residents in Palawan reported loud booms and bright flashes lighting up the sky.

Parts of the rocket have already landed in the sea near Rizal and Balabac, according to PhilSA and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). These towns are located within the identified drop zone, which was announced in a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) before the launch.

PhilSA warned that some debris could still fall and may be toxic or dangerous if handled. People are advised to avoid touching or going near any strange metal objects found on the shore or in the water.

"The public is advised to immediately inform local authorities of any suspected debris sighted at sea or land," NDRRMC stated.

Officials explained that space launches like this are common, but falling rocket parts still pose risks when they land near populated areas. That’s why early warnings and safety coordination are important.

So far, no injuries or property damage have been reported. Local governments in southern Palawan remain on alert and are working with national agencies to keep people safe.

If you're in southern Palawan, check with local officials or your hotel before heading out. It’s safer to avoid the beach for now and explore inland. Always put safety first.
