Meet Ari Agbayani, the Filipina Captain America-Inspired Marvel Hero

If the early 2020s felt like a turning point for Filipino representation on the global stage, Marvel Comics made sure it was part of that moment. Around the same time Filipino designers were gaining international recognition and Filipino stories were finally making their way into mainstream animation, Marvel introduced a new kind of hero to its universe, one with Filipino roots and a very familiar shield.

Enter Ari Agbayani, a Filipina inspired by Captain America, who made her debut as part of Marvel’s expanding roster of diverse superheroes. Years later, her introduction still stands as a meaningful step in representation, especially for Filipino readers who rarely see themselves reflected in iconic comic book roles.

Arielle Agbayani, known as Ari, draws clear inspiration from Captain America, one of Marvel’s most recognisable heroes. She carries a shield of her own and sports a costume influenced by the iconic red, white, and blue colour palette, though her story and motivations are firmly grounded in a more modern and grounded setting.

According to Marvel Comics, Ari’s story centres on her life as a scholar at a small private university. When the institution repeatedly ignores wrongdoing and protects students from wealthy and influential families, Ari decides to take matters into her own hands. Rather than waiting for authority figures to step in, she actively seeks justice for those who are silenced.

Her motivation becomes deeply personal when her best friend is victimised by a powerful legacy student. With the university more concerned about donors and reputation than accountability, Ari is forced to get creative in order to expose the truth and fight back against abuse of power.

Rather than taking after Steve Rogers directly, Ari’s approach is closer to Bucky Barnes’ version of Captain America. She relies on clever tactics, stealth, and strategy, especially when dealing with bullies, a group she openly despises.

The making of and an early controversy

Ari Agbayani was created by writer Alyssa Wong and designer Jodi Nishijima. Wong, who is Filipino American herself, has spoken openly about wanting to see more Filipino characters represented in global comics and animation. Creating Ari allowed her to contribute directly to that representation within one of the world’s biggest comic franchises.

“When editor Alanna Smith approached me about creating a new, local Captain America for this series, I immediately knew I wanted to write a Filipino-American girl,” Wong shared. “Every time I see a Filipino character, I get excited. Getting to create one, especially a Captain America, felt incredibly special.”

While many Filipino fans celebrated Ari’s debut, her introduction was not without criticism. Some raised concerns over her nickname “Ari,” which in Tagalog can be interpreted as a slang term for genitals. The issue sparked discussions online about cultural sensitivity and the importance of deeper consultation when naming characters rooted in specific cultures.

Despite the debate, Ari Agbayani officially debuted in September 2021 as part of The United States of Captain America, a limited series that followed multiple individuals who took up the Captain America mantle across different eras. The storyline featured an American road trip led by familiar characters as they searched for Steve Rogers’ stolen shield.

Years on, Ari remains a notable milestone in Marvel’s efforts to broaden representation, and a reminder of how Filipino stories continue to find space in global pop culture.
