Filipino Green Card Holder Detained by ICE After Trip Back to US

A warning to Filipinos in the US: ICE has been detaining Filipinos returning from trips abroad, including Sonny Lasquite, who was taken into custody and brought to the Stewart Detention Center in Stewart County, Georgia, right after landing.

His family says the detention came as a shock and has left them scrambling to prevent his deportation.

According to a GoFundMe created by his relatives, "Sonny is more than a name. He is a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend whose kindness has touched countless lives." The fundraiser also described him as the family’s breadwinner who has "lived peacefully in the United States, working hard, caring for his elderly mother, and always putting others before himself."

"But today," the post continues, "Sonny is facing a crisis that could take him away from everyone who loves him. His detention has been especially hard on our elderly mother, whose health is declining under the weight of this stress."

For the past 23 years, Lasquite has lived in the US, working as a banquet server in Las Vegas and supporting his family. His relatives also claim he has faced medical neglect while in custody, including delayed access to his blood pressure medication and proper care for a recent fever.

His case mirrors that of other Filipino green card holders including Lewelyn Dixon and Maximo “Kuya Max” Londonio who were also stopped at US airports after returning from trips abroad.

The Philippine Consulate General in New York confirmed it is monitoring these cases. "We stay in regular contact with their detention centres to check on their welfare," said Rovald Valdez, Assistance to Nationals officer.

ICE records show Lasquite’s detention stems from a 2012 case involving distribution of controlled substances. Court records indicate he had already served his sentence and paid court-ordered fines years ago.

As of Tuesday, Lasquite’s GoFundMe had raised more than $13,000 to fund his legal fight against deportation.

If you are a Filipino green card holder with any past criminal record, even from years ago, think twice before travelling abroad. US immigration authorities can still detain and process removal upon your return.
