Ginzan Onsen, a picturesque hot spring town nestled in Japan’s Yamagata region, is taking proactive measures to tackle overtourism. Renowned for its tranquil atmosphere and snowy charm, the town will implement visitor restrictions starting 23 Dec 2024, continuing through March 2025. These changes aim to preserve the area’s serene beauty, alleviate overcrowding, and ensure a safe experience for both visitors and locals.

During the winter months, Ginzan Onsen will regulate access to manage the increasing number of tourists. Between 9am and 4pm, day trippers can visit without restrictions. However, stricter rules will apply during the evening hours. From 5pm to 8pm, only 100 day trippers will be permitted entry, and only if they hold a confirmed ticket or reservation. Visitors without tickets will be required to leave the town after 5 pm. For those planning a trip, tickets can be conveniently booked in advance through the official website.
After 8pm, access will be restricted to overnight guests staying at local hotels, town employees, and vehicles designated for official or business purposes. These measures aim to maintain the peaceful atmosphere that Ginzan Onsen is celebrated for, particularly during its illuminated evening hours.
To further ease congestion, day trippers visiting Ginzan Onsen until the end of February will need to park at the Taisho Romankan Tourism Centre, located 2 kilometers away from the main hot spring area. A paid shuttle bus service will transport visitors to and from the town, costing ₱423 per person per ride. This system ensures smoother traffic flow and enhances the visitor experience.
Ginzan Onsen joins other popular Japanese destinations, such as Mount Fuji, Kyoto, and parts of Tokyo, in implementing visitor limits to combat overtourism. These efforts reflect a broader commitment across Japan to sustainable tourism practices, balancing visitor enjoyment with the preservation of local culture and natural beauty.
