Manila considers building a Halal Town in the historic district of Quiapo, making it a centre for muslim-friendly culture and business.
The proposed Halal Town Manila will cover Globo de Oro, Arlegui, Bautista, and Elizondo streets, all within walking distance of Plaza Miranda and Quiapo Church, right next to the Manila Golden Mosque.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno and Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman visited the area to check the proposed development. The plan includes improving streets for pedestrians and creating outdoor dining spaces. Some roads might be closed to cars, so people can walk, eat, and shop safely and comfortably.
Moreno said the project will highlight the skills and heritage of the Muslim community. “People can go here, feel safe, eat clean food, buy clothes, and enjoy the area,” he said. The project will also help small vendors who do not have registered businesses improve and grow in a proper way.

Budget Secretary Pangandaman, the only Muslim in the cabinet and a Maranao princess, fully supports the project. She said the national government is ready to provide funding through the Department of Budget and Management. The final project cost is not finished yet, but Pangandaman said local government support and DBM-managed funds will help pay for the project.
She also said that the development will complement other city projects, such as the proposed Intramuros park, so the city can grow in a planned and organised way.

The timing is ideal. The Philippines will host the ASEAN Summit next year, and delegates from Muslim countries may want to visit a Muslim-friendly district.
Pangandaman said the halal industry generates billions of dollars globally. Developing the area can bring more tourists, create jobs for Filipinos, and support small businesses in Quiapo. Mayor Moreno added that investing in the district will make sure the local economy benefits in the right way.
Mayor Moreno also promised to improve security in the area. He asked residents to help keep the streets clean and safe so visitors can enjoy food, shopping, and culture without worry. These improvements aim to make the area comfortable and welcoming for everyone.

The area will offer more than just halal food. Visitors can explore local shops, enjoy outdoor dining, and experience Muslim culture in Quiapo. It will also be a space where small Muslim-owned businesses can grow, giving tourists and locals a chance to support the community.
The development is not just about food or shopping. It will create jobs, support small businesses, and help make Manila more welcoming for Muslim tourists. For Filipinos, Quiapo could become a reliable spot for safe, clean, and culturally rich experiences in the heart of the city.
The project shows Manila as a Muslim-friendly city, while boosting jobs, supporting small businesses, and attracting both local and international visitors. Quiapo is set to become a top spot for halal food, shopping, and culture in the capital.
