The Ho Chi Minh City Metro line, spanning nearly 20km, connects key areas of the city centre. The $1.7 billion project was primarily funded by Japanese government loans, then initially approved in 2007 with an estimated cost of $668 million. Construction commenced in 2012 with an ambitious five-year timeline. However, a plethora of changes, including slow capital disbursement, unexpected technical issues, personnel difficulties, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, led to the significant delays and cost overruns through the following years.
Despite the years of setbacks, the opening of the first-ever metro line was greeted with immense public enthusiasm. Thousands of residents, eager to experience the new mode of transport, flocked to the stations on the day of inauguration. The Ho Chi Minh City Metro line is expected to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and provide a more efficient and comfortable commuting experience for the city's 9 million residents.

While the inauguration of the first line is a historic achievement, challenges still remain. With only 14 stations, the initial impact on the traffic congestion may be limited. However, experts believe that the lessons learned from this project will streamline the construction of future lines, making them even more efficient and cost-effective.
For many residents, the Ho Chi Minh City Metro line holds significant historical meaning. For instance, an 84-year-old war veteran, who spent years fighting in the city's famous Cu Chi tunnels, expressed his delight at experiencing an underground environment in a positive and modern context.

The inauguration of the Ho Chi Minh City Metro line marks a turning point in the city's urban development. While challenges were encountered initially during the project's implementation, the successful launch signifies a commitment to improving the city's infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. As the city expands and its population continues to grow, the Ho Chi Minh City Metro line is expected to play a vital role in ensuring sustainable and efficient urban mobility for both locals and visitors.
