3D2N La Union Itinerary: Eat, Surf, and Party on a Budget (2026 Guide)

Sometimes, the best trips with your barkada start with a simple "Tara?" That was exactly how our first friendship trip to San Juan, La Union came together. Home to beginner-friendly surf breaks, a thriving café culture, vibrant nightlife, and plenty of great food, this laidback coastal town remains one of the best weekend escapes from Manila.

Although there are countless things to do in Elyu, my friends and I intentionally kept our itinerary relaxed instead of filling every hour with activities. We wanted to enjoy the beach, discover local cafés, and experience the town at our own pace. If that sounds like your kind of getaway, here's the same itinerary updated with practical travel information for 2026.

How to get to La Union

San Juan, La Union is around five to seven hours from Metro Manila, depending on traffic. If you're driving, taking the Metro Manila Skyway and connecting to NLEX and TPLEX remains one of the fastest routes. If you're commuting, several bus companies, including Partas, Viron Transit, Dominion Bus Lines, and Maria de Leon, operate daily trips from Metro Manila to San Fernando or San Juan. Travel times usually range from five to seven hours, and fares vary depending on the operator and bus type.

Where to stay in La Union

For this trip, we stayed in Urbiztondo, the heart of San Juan's surfing scene. The area offers everything from budget hostels and transient houses to boutique hotels and beachfront resorts, all within walking distance of cafés, restaurants, surf schools, and the beach. Our accommodation was EMO Transient Inn, where we paid around ₱700 per person per night at the time of our visit. If you're planning a trip today, accommodation rates may be higher depending on the season, so it's worth booking early, especially during weekends and holidays.

Getting around La Union

One of the best things about staying in Urbiztondo is that most attractions are walkable. Cafés, restaurants, bars, surf schools, and the beach are all located within a short distance of each other. For destinations farther away, tricycles remain the most convenient option. It's also a good idea to carry cash, as some smaller establishments and transport services may still prefer cash payments.

Day 1

We left Manila early in the morning and arrived in La Union just after lunchtime. After checking into our accommodation, we headed to Silong Café for our first meal. Their Filipino comfort food made for the perfect welcome to Elyu.

The afternoon was spent swimming, relaxing by the beach, and taking photos before dinner at Tagpuan, one of La Union's best-known budget-friendly eateries.

After dinner, we stopped by Ohana House for coffee. Editor's note (2026): Since our visit, Ohana House appears to have closed or changed operations. Travellers looking for a similar café experience may want to check out newer favourites such as Masa Bakehouse or Muni Nook.

As the sun set, we ended our first night at Fatwave Surf Resort, which continues to be one of San Juan's popular beachfront bars for cocktails, music, and sunset drinks.

Day 2

We started the morning with coffee and pastries at Karruba Café & Bakery before heading straight to the beach for surfing.

Surfing remains one of the biggest reasons travellers visit La Union. Beginners can easily find instructors along the beach, with lessons typically including board rental and basic coaching. Rates may differ from what we paid during our visit, so it's best to check with local surf schools before your trip.

After an exhausting but memorable surf session, we rewarded ourselves with lunch at Elyu Inasal.

Editor's note (2026): Chu's Diner, one of the restaurants we visited, is no longer operating. Fortunately, The Great Northwest continues to house several dining options, so visitors will still have plenty of choices.

No La Union trip is complete without experiencing Flotsam and Jetsam. The lively atmosphere, beachfront setting, live music, and weekend parties continue to make it one of the town's most popular nightlife destinations.

Day 3

Our final morning began with brunch at The Coffee Library before grabbing another cup of coffee from El Union, still one of the town's most iconic coffee spots.

Before driving back to Manila, we stopped by Clean Beach for lunch. Aside from its food, it's also a great place for travellers looking to work remotely thanks to its reliable WiFi and relaxed atmosphere.

The drive back took over six hours because of Metro Manila traffic, but great playlists and good company made the journey home just as memorable as the trip itself.

Apart from their hearty fare, Clean Beach is one of the best spots in La Union for digital nomads. Thanks to their fast WiFi connection and delicious selection of caffeinated beverages, it makes for the perfect workplace by the beach!

The drive back to Manila took a little over six hours, considering the expected metro traffic. Nevertheless, we were entertained by road trip songs (shoutout to the High School Musical soundtrack) and fun brain teasers. Overall, it was truly a well-spent vacation with my best friends!

Note: The prices in our original trip have naturally changed over the years. As a guide, here's a more realistic budget for a similar 3D2N trip today:

• Food and coffee: ₱3,000–₱4,000
