Commuting around Metro Manila is never easy, but every now and then there is something that makes the ride a little lighter. On 16 September 2025, the Light Rail Transit Line 2 or LRT-2 rolled out free rides for Philippine National ID holders. It was a much-needed breather for regular commuters and students travelling along the busy purple line.

The free ride programme is open during the morning and evening rush hours. Passengers with a valid Philippine National ID, whether physical or digital, can enjoy free rides on the following schedules:
7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
This means you can save on fares during the most expensive part of the day. For students, workers, and daily commuters, it is at least two rides covered without touching your wallet.

Santolan station briefly suspended operations early Tuesday because of a technical glitch. The issue lasted for around one hour, but by 7:32 a.m. services were back to normal. The timing meant passengers still caught the morning window for the free rides.
For people coming from Marikina, Pasig, and nearby areas, Santolan is a key gateway into the LRT-2. Even a short disruption can cause stress, but the quick fix allowed travellers to continue their journeys without losing out on the libreng sakay programme.
Transport expenses in Metro Manila add up fast. From jeepney connections to train fares and last mile rides, the daily cost of commuting is a challenge for many. Programmes like libreng sakay make a real difference, especially for those travelling five or six times a week.
For students, the savings can mean an extra meal or allowance money that stretches further. For workers, it can add up to hundreds of pesos saved over time. Even tourists exploring the city can benefit by hopping on the purple line without paying a fare.
Always bring your Philippine National ID, either the card or the digital version.
Expect bigger crowds during the free ride hours, so travel light if you can.
Plan your journey to make sure you arrive at the station during the free ride window.

By mid-morning, LRT-2 services were fully operational again, and passengers enjoyed their rides without charge. The glitch at Santolan may have been an inconvenience, but the bigger story is how libreng sakay gave commuters a welcome financial break on 16 September.
If you are travelling soon, make sure to catch the free ride hours on the LRT-2. It is a rare chance to save money while moving through Metro Manila more quickly and comfortably.
