Adventure lovers, rejoice! The Mt. Pinatubo Capas Trail is officially open again. After months of closure for safety inspections, environmental preservation, and community consultations, this popular trekking destination in Luzon is finally welcoming back travellers starting June 23, 2025.
Located in Capas, Tarlac, this trail offers access to the famed crater lake of Mt. Pinatubo, a volcano known for its dramatic 1991 eruption and breathtaking transformation. The reopening isn’t just about hitting the trails again. It’s a carefully planned move that emphasises sustainable tourism, respect for nature, and the active involvement of local indigenous communities.

In May, the local government of Botolan, Zambales, issued a temporary suspension of all tourism activities at Mt. Pinatubo. The goal? To prioritise safety, re-evaluate environmental impact, and ensure that future tours support both ecological conservation and local communities.
Following that, an Executive Order was released, greenlighting the reopening of the trail, but with new policies in place. This time, the rules were created in collaboration with indigenous groups whose ancestral lands surround the volcano. Their voices and heritage now play a key role in how the site is managed and protected.

Whether you’re a returning traveller or a first-time trekker, you can look forward to a Mt. Pinatubo that’s not just scenic but also meaningful. The trek remains as stunning as ever. Imagine a rugged landscape of lahar canyons leading to the serene crater lake, but now, the experience is also steeped in cultural and environmental awareness.
The Capas LGU and Botolan LGU have worked together to ensure that the reopening reflects a balance between tourism growth and community-led conservation. Visitors are encouraged to trek responsibly, follow safety protocols, and book only with LGU-accredited tour operators, which offer daily private group tours.

Now that the Mt. Pinatubo Capas Trail has reopened, you can start planning your next nature escape. Tours are available daily but must be booked in advance to help manage visitor flow and ensure that tourism benefits are returned to the communities who protect and manage the area.
So if you’ve been waiting for the right time to visit, Mt. Pinatubo offers more than just adventure.
