Adopt, Don’t Shop: Over 100 Rescued Dogs and Cats in Bulacan Up for Adoption

“50 dogs on death row. To be executed by gunshot. What would you do?” This is how Pawssion Project begins its webpage description, which goes on to tell the story of Malou Perez, a young woman from Bacolod City who founded the non-profit organisation in 2018 after stepping up to save the lives of these animals.

With nothing more than “hope, courage, and unwavering support of a few good friends'” Perez was able to help strays and abandoned pets through rescue programmes. This would often be followed by rehabilitation and rehoming. Now, two years since that first big rescue, Pawssion Project has faced yet another major challenge — this time, involving over 100 dogs and cats in need of our help.

“There are currently 100 dogs on death row at the Bulacan pound, together with a number of cats. They have been there for over a month now as the city vet does not want to euthanize as much as possible,” Pawssion Project said in an announcement on 15 Oct 2020. “But with the current law and mandate, even with active spay and neuter campaigns, they cannot refuse to impounding requests as well as people surrendering at the pound.”

Pawssion Project leads rescue, encourages Filipinos to adopt rather than shop

On 21 Oct 2020, Perez and a team of animal lovers successfully rescued 37 dogs from the pound located in San Jose del Monte (SJDM). The rest, according to Perez, could no longer be accommodated in their shelter in the same city.

Nonetheless, Pawssion Project was able to raise sufficient funds to pay for the adoption fee of all the animals. At ₱500 per dog, it already covers anti-rabies shots and free spaying or neutering.

“Please encourage people to adopt or at least foster. Donate and sponsor if you can’t take in one,” added the post. “We can help facilitate adoption from the pound, pay for adoption fees as well but we really need adopters. We cannot take them all to the shelter.”

Pawssion Project further commended the SJDM City Vet for their efforts in caring for the dogs. “We are thankful to the team of SJDM City Vet as they give vitamins, feed the impounded dogs twice a day, and really push for adoption — but only few come to adopt,” the organisation said. “So many of them are still a bit healthy and adoptable. A number were surrendered by owners as they can no longer sustain their needs given the pandemic.”
