Passengers on a Scoot flight from Ipoh to Singapore got more than they expected when they realised they were sharing the cabin with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Instead of flying on a private jet, the President took an economy seat on a budget flight after a two-day working visit to Ipoh.
The trip turned memorable when passengers broke into applause before the plane even took off. The President, seated in the front row as the last to board, stood up, looked back and waved with ease. Travellers quickly pulled out their phones to capture the moment.
This was not his first time either. A day earlier, he had already flown into Ipoh on a Scoot flight and was recognised by fellow passengers as soon as he stepped off the plane.
President Tharman was travelling with his wife, Jane Ittogi, and was received by Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak. His visit included breakfast at the Old Town White Coffee Experience Centre, a walk along Concubine Lane, and a stop at the Ho Yan Hor Museum.

The sight of a world leader in economy sends a clear message. Travel does not always need luxury, and sometimes the most powerful statement is made by choosing the humble option.
