Cebu’s Moalboal is finalist at Philippine Tourism Awards 2025

Moalboal in Cebu, the town known for its famous sardine run, is now making news for something bigger. It has been named a finalist in the first Philippine Tourism Awards 2025.

The judging wrapped up in July and the winners will be announced on 8 September at Okada Manila in Parañaque. This award is not just another plaque or certificate. It is the top recognition in the country’s tourism industry, created to honour places and communities that do more than just attract visitors. It celebrates those that protect the environment, empower locals, and keep culture alive while still welcoming travellers.

For Moalboal, this is proof that the town is serious about responsible tourism. They said being a finalist shows their commitment to ethical tourism, marine conservation, and inclusive governance. That might sound like big words, but what it really means is that Moalboal wants its people and its seas to thrive together.

Mayor Inocentes Cabaron said it best: “This milestone belongs to every Moalboalanon who continues to protect our coastlines, celebrate our culture, and welcome the world with open arms. We are deeply grateful for this national recognition.”

Tourism officer Liz Arden Aquino also dedicated the recognition to locals. “This honour reflects the heart and soul of Moalboal’s tourism rooted in sustainability, community empowerment, and cultural pride. We dedicate this to our local champions, from fisherfolk to dive guides, who make Moalboal a truly unforgettable destination.”

So when Moalboal goes to Okada Manila next month, it is not just bringing the image of its sardine run or dive sites. It is carrying the pride of Cebu and the Visayas region, along with the stories of the people who make this small town unforgettable.

Moalboal’s recognition should make you see it differently. Yes, it is a place to swim with millions of sardines and chill by the sea, but now it is also officially recognised as one of the country’s tourism gems for its efforts in sustainability and community pride. If you are planning a Cebu trip soon, consider this your sign to put Moalboal on your must-visit list.
