Can you believe it’s already been three years since the famous “Thai Cave Rescue”? To refresh your memory, we’re talking about the time we anxiously waited for updates on a young football team that got stranded in a flooded Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai, Thailand. The incident, which took place from June to July 2018, had people all over the globe on the edge of our seats for two nerve-wracking weeks.
The football team known as the Wild Boars consisted of 12 players aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach. In an awe-inspiring feat, a search and rescue (SAR) involving over 10,000 people took place. Thankfully, all 12 boys and their coach were successfully rescued; but unfortunately, two members of the SAR party lost their lives during the operation.
“Thai Cave Rescue” Netflix series finally in production
As promised back in 2019, a “Thai Cave Rescue” series is coming to Netflix — and we finally have actual details on it. The series is already in production in Chiang Rai, and it’s set to air in 2022.
Cast and crew
In an official statement, Netflix announced that the “Thai Cave Rescue” story will be released as a Limited Series, which means we can expect between 4 and 10 episodes. The streaming giant also revealed that the series will be brought to the screen by a team of directors and producers that include: Nattawut “Baz” Poonpiriya (Bad Genius); Kevin Tancharoen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.); Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians); Dana Ledoux Miller (Designated Survivor); and Michaell Rusell Gunn (Billions).
As for the cast, Papangkorn “Beam” Lerkchaleampote from Thai Netflix original series The Stranded will play coach Ekkapol “Ek” Chantawong. The young footballers, on the other hand, will be played by Thai newcomers.
“I am excited and honored to be bringing the Tham Luang story to the screen. My goal is to craft an authentic portrayal of what happened with respect to the experiences of those who were there,” Director Nattawut Poonpiriya said. “In partnership with talented Asian-American storytellers like Jon M. Chu and Kevin Tancharoen, we are confident that our retelling of this remarkable story will resonate with audiences worldwide.”
