Virgin Island, also known as Puntod Island, in Bohol is set to temporarily close to tourists starting Monday, 9 Sep 2024, following recent events that have prompted the need for immediate conservation efforts. The closure, which is set to remain in effect until further notice, was mandated by the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The decision to close the island comes in response to a viral video that surfaced showing a man vandalising a coral reef on the island. The video, which quickly gained attention, highlighted the need for urgent action to protect and rehabilitate this precious marine habitat.
According to the Provincial Government of Bohol, the closure extends to all water-based activities around Virgin Island, with a few exceptions. Gleaning boat passage to Balicasag Island and Fishcage operations managed by the Danao United Fishermen's Association (DUFA) within the Panglao Island Protected Seascape (PIPS) will be allowed. This measure is intended to ensure the ongoing protection of the island while still accommodating essential activities.
In a proactive response to the vandalism incident, Bohol Governor Aris Aumentado had previously announced a ₱200,000 cash reward for information leading to the identification of the individual responsible for the damage. The governor has since confirmed that authorities have gathered information on the culprit and are conducting a thorough investigation to address the situation.
On 9 Sep 2024, Governor Aumentado shared updates on the closure through social media, including photos of the island now marked with closure signages. He commended the DENR employees for their diligent efforts in ensuring that no visitors access the island during this period. Aumentado also emphasized the importance of environmental protection, stating, "Patuloy nating bantayan at palagi nating protektahan ang ating kalikasan," which translates to "Let us continue to guard and always protect our nature."

As the island undergoes rehabilitation, the public is urged to respect the closure and support the efforts to restore Virgin Island to its natural beauty. This temporary measure aims to safeguard the environment and ensure that such incidents do not recur, reinforcing the importance of preserving Bohol’s stunning natural resources for future generations.
