Our favourite places to stay on this sleepy Cebu island.
When people think about travelling in the Philippines, popular names usually come first. Boracay, Cebu, Palawan and Siargao are often at the top of the list. But for those who crave a place that feels raw, quiet and less commercialised, Eastern Samar is a destination worth adding to your plans.
This province in Eastern Visayas is often overlooked, which is exactly what makes it so refreshing. It is a destination where nature is still unspoiled, communities are welcoming and traditions remain strong. Eastern Samar is the kind of place that surprises you, offering adventures that feel authentic and unforgettable.

Eastern Samar has been slowly making a name in the surfing scene. Borongan, the capital, is perfect for beginners and intermediate surfers with its consistent swells and relaxed vibe. Further south, Guiuan and Calicoan Island are popular with more experienced surfers looking for stronger waves and scenic shorelines. Surf camps here are small and friendly, giving you the chance to enjoy the waves without the busy crowds that often come with mainstream surf destinations.

Nature lovers will not run out of things to do in Eastern Samar. Lulugayan Falls in Calbiga is sometimes called the Mini Niagara of Samar because of its wide and powerful cascade. The trek to reach it is relatively easy, and the cool waters make it a great reward after the walk. For adventurers who enjoy exploring caves, Calbiga is also home to Sulpan and Linao caves, both offering a look into fascinating underground landscapes. Unlike other provinces, these spots remain peaceful and uncrowded.

Eastern Samar is not only about outdoor adventures. It is also rich in heritage and history. Guiuan is a town with stories that go back centuries. It was one of the first landing sites of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 and later became an important base during World War II. The Immaculate Conception Parish Church is a coral stone structure that has withstood typhoons and still stands as a symbol of resilience. Walking around Guiuan gives you a glimpse of the province’s history and cultural depth.

The province is perfect for travellers who want to experience the Philippines in a more genuine way. The mix of surfing, waterfalls, caves, island hopping and heritage sites makes it an ideal place for both adventure and relaxation.
If you are looking for a destination that still feels like a hidden treasure, Eastern Samar is waiting for you. It may not yet be on every travel guide, but those who have been here know it offers some of the best experiences in the country.
