Is Japan Going Visa-Free for Filipinos? What Travellers Should Know Before Applying

Japan is studying ways to ease visa rules for Filipinos as Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya confirmed that better travel arrangements are being explored for Philippine passport holders.

For travellers already watching seat sales to Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Hokkaido, the update is promising. But it is not a visa-free announcement yet. Japan is still weighing public safety, national security, the economy, and society before making any major policy change.

Endo said visa-free entry is one of the questions he is most often asked by Filipinos. “Our embassy has been making steady efforts to improve and streamline the application processes,” he said, adding that Japan will continue to explore what better arrangements may be possible.

The more immediate news is this: while visa-free entry remains uncertain, Japan has already made parts of the current visa process more organised through application centres, eVisas for select travellers, and eased multiple-entry requirements for qualified applicants.

Japan visa types Filipinos can apply for now

First-time applicants should know that there are three main Japan tourist visa routes available for Filipinos today:

  • Regular single-entry tourist visa. The usual option for most Filipino travellers taking a short Japan holiday, including DIY trips with self-booked flights, hotels, and itineraries.

  • Japan eVisa. A digital option, but only for single-entry tourist package tours arranged through designated travel agencies. DIY travellers still need the regular visa sticker on their passport.

  • Multiple-entry tourist visa. An option for eligible travellers who meet Japan’s requirements, including those who can prove a substantial level of income. Since 2024, Japan has eased some multiple-entry visa rules for qualified Filipinos.

Filipino tourists cannot simply walk into the Japanese Embassy to submit a visa application. Applications are usually coursed through accredited agencies.

For many travellers, these are the key options to know:

  • Reli Tours. A common choice for travellers who want mall-based branches, including SM locations. Its published 2026 tourist visa total for Filipino passport holders is around ₱2,750, including handling and VFS-related fees.

  • Universal Holidays Inc.. A long-running accredited agency in Makati, often chosen by travellers who want more guided handling and service options.

  • Attic Tours. Relevant for travellers booking package tours, especially those looking into arrangements linked to Japan eVisa applications.

Before applying, check the latest fees directly with the agency. Prices and service options can change.

One small detail can also delay your application: documents must be prepared in A4 size. Visa application forms should be typed where possible, and unclear handwritten entries may be rejected or sent back for correction.

For many Filipino travellers, the real stress is not the itinerary. It is the bank certificate.

Japan does not publish a fixed bank balance that guarantees approval. Still, many agencies advise travellers to prepare a realistic amount that matches the length and cost of the trip. A common working benchmark is around ₱5,000 to ₱10,000 per day of travel.

What matters is not just the amount, but whether the account looks steady and believable. A short Japan trip with consistent savings will usually look stronger than a long itinerary supported by a sudden large deposit.

For freelancers and remote workers without an Income Tax Return, prepare a short explanation letter. Support it with six months of steady bank statements, active foreign client contracts, or other proof of regular income.

Visa-free Japan travel may be under study, but it is not something travellers should wait on before planning a trip.

For now, the better move is practical. Choose the right visa route, prepare your documents early, check agency fees, and make sure your bank papers match your itinerary.

Japan may be looking at easier entry for Filipinos but the current process is already more structured than before. For travellers eyeing the next seat sale or holiday break, proper paperwork is still the fastest way to get the trip moving.
