There are many other beautiful places in the Philippines outside its capital, but these 5 destinations will let you enjoy weekend trips with great ease.

El Nido in Palawan is usually the kind of destination that looks unreal in every photo. Think crystal clear lagoons, dramatic limestone cliffs, and white sand beaches that feel almost too perfect to be real.
That is exactly why a recent viral video shocked a lot of travellers online.
The footage, reportedly taken on 20 May 2026, shows muddy water flowing across a white sand beach before directly entering the sea. Instead of the usual clear turquoise shoreline El Nido is known for, viewers saw a sudden stream of brownish water cutting across the sand.
The video quickly spread on social media, with many people questioning what caused it and whether it was linked to nearby resorts or environmental damage.
Local authorities later clarified what was happening in the video.
Barangay Masagana Chairperson Edilberto Templado Jr explained that the water seen flowing across the beach is part of a natural waterway connected to the surrounding mountains.
According to him, this happens more clearly during heavy rainfall. Water from higher ground carries soil, sand, and natural debris down the mountains, passing through waterways before reaching the shoreline and flowing into the sea.
Officials also emphasised that this is not a new phenomenon, and it has been observed in the area for years, especially during the rainy season when runoff becomes stronger.
One of the main concerns online was whether the muddy water was coming from a nearby hotel visible in the video. Local officials clarified that the water does not originate from the hotel or its facilities.
The hotel management also said their authorised spokesperson was out of the country when the video went viral and is expected to return in early June, with a full statement still pending.
The incident has also drawn attention from the Department of Tourism, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the local government of El Nido, which are currently being consulted regarding the situation.

For travellers planning a trip, it is important to understand that tropical destinations like El Nido can change depending on weather conditions.
Heavy rainfall can temporarily affect water clarity when sediment from mountains and rivers flows into coastal areas. This can make seawater appear cloudy or brown near the shore for a short period.
These changes are usually temporary and weather dependent, and conditions often return to normal once rainfall subsides.
El Nido remains one of the top travel destinations in the Philippines, known for its island hopping tours, hidden lagoons, limestone cliffs, and scenic beaches that continue to attract travellers from around the world.
The viral video may have sparked concern, but it also highlights how natural processes can shape even the most postcard perfect destinations.
