The Philippines has confirmed its first mpox (monkeypox) case for 2024, marking the country's 10th case since the viral infection first emerged. The Department of Health (DOH) announced on Monday, 19 Aug 2024, that a 33-year-old male from Metro Manila tested positive for mpox. This development comes shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years.

The patient, who did not have any recent travel history, is currently in isolation. Health authorities have initiated contact tracing efforts to prevent the further spread of the virus. According to Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, the patient visited two establishments in Quezon City, including a derma clinic and a massage spa located in E. Rodriguez. In response, the local government unit (LGU) has placed close contacts of the patient under quarantine as part of containment measures.
Additionally, the massage spa has been ordered to close due to expired permits, adding another layer of concern for local authorities as they work to manage the situation.
For travellers, this news serves as a critical reminder to prioritise safety and health, especially during this time of heightened vigilance. Here are some essential tips to consider:
1. Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated with the latest travel advisories and health alerts from reliable sources like the WHO and DOH.
2. Practise Good Hygiene: Regularly wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, especially after being in public places. Avoid touching your face, particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth.
3. Monitor Your Health: If you experience symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, or rashes, seek medical attention immediately. Early detection is key to preventing the spread of infections like mpox.
4. Choose Safe Establishments: When travelling, ensure that the places you visit, such as spas, clinics, and other public venues, comply with health and safety regulations. Avoid establishments that do not have proper permits or seem unsanitary.
