If you have ever had to take off your shoes in a busy airport queue, juggling your hand-carry and passport while trying not to lose your socks, this update is for you. The United States has officially ended its long-standing shoe removal rule at airport security checkpoints.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has rolled out a nationwide change. Travellers going through standard security no longer need to take off their shoes. This means less hassle and shorter queues, especially for those who are always rushing to catch their flight.

The rule began in 2001 after a failed terrorist attempt involving explosives hidden in shoes. Since then, shoe removal became part of the regular airport routine in the US and was made mandatory by 2006. Unless you were part of the TSA PreCheck programme, taking your shoes off was something you could not skip.
But things are different now. Thanks to new screening technology and a stronger security system, the TSA is confident that passengers can keep their shoes on without compromising safety.
As of July 2025, shoe removal is no longer required for most travellers going through TSA checkpoints. This policy now applies at all airports across the United States.
The change follows successful trials at select airports including Portland, Baltimore, and Fort Lauderdale. After proving that the new tech works, the TSA made the policy official across the country.

The Department of Homeland Security says the update is part of a more modern and layered approach to airport security. New scanners, facial recognition tools, and identity verification systems like Real ID have made the process smarter and more efficient.
These tools can detect threats without needing passengers to remove their shoes. The goal is to make the experience safer and smoother at the same time.
Yes, there are. While most passengers can now walk through security with their shoes on, TSA officers may still ask some people to remove them. This could happen if the scanner picks up something suspicious or if additional screening is needed.
Also, if you are part of the TSA PreCheck programme, you still enjoy more benefits. These include keeping your belt, jacket, and even your laptop in place while passing through security. So if you travel often, PreCheck still makes a difference.

If you are planning a trip to the US soon, this update is one less thing to worry about. No more holding up the line while untying your shoes. No more rushing to get them back on while grabbing your tray and bags.
Whether you are visiting family, going on a US road trip, or simply stopping over, this small change can make your airport experience much easier. It is a simple improvement, but one that travellers will definitely feel.
