Countless new films and TV shows are being filmed, conceptualised, and released almost every day. And while a number of them are excellent, we can’t deny it: sometimes, they just don’t make ’em like they used to. Fans of movies and series from the ’90s all the way up to the 2010s have much to look forward to, though: a number of iconic shows are making a comeback!
A number of series reboots are already in production, while others have yet to reveal their official castings just yet. Here’s what we know so far about the series reboots, spin-offs, and reunions coming your way in 2021 and 2022!

If you couldn’t help but wonder what the girls of Sex and the City have been up to, then you’re about to find out! The series, which ran for six seasons after it premiered in 1998, is set for a revival with on-demand streaming service HBO Max. Titled And Just Like That…, the series reboot will consist of 10 half-hour episodes, focusing on how Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda navigate through love, sex, and friendship in their 50s. Unfortunately, Kim Catrall, who plays Samantha Jones, will not be returning for the series revival.
Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis took to Instagram to announce the upcoming series. Filming is set to start in late spring, so we can expect the revival to launch in early 2022 — or late this year, if we’re lucky!
Friends fans, it’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for: a complete cast reunion, at last — and in honour of the series’ 25th anniversary, too! (How has it been that long?) According to Lisa Kudrow, this will mark the very first time all the stars of the hit TV series will be appearing together since the show ended in 2004.
To be clear, this won’t be a series reboot or a new episode; the cast is simply coming together for a “Reunion Special”, which will be aired on HBO Max. This being said, they won’t be playing their old roles, but will be appearing as themselves — the cast will revisit the original set, share behind-the-scenes footage, and treating the audience to a few surprises.
While the entire cast teased a reunion back in February 2020, the reunion has been pushed back again and again due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a Twitter update by Matthew Perry, the reunion is scheduled to air in March 2021. We have no doubt it’ll be worth the wait!
Hey, Upper East Siders! Have you heard? Gossip Girl will once again be gracing your screens via HBO Max sometime in 2021. In the series reboot, we’ll meet a whole new crop of Manhattan’s elite — and, who knows, maybe even a select few from Brooklyn! Don’t expect to see the original characters from the CW series, though; despite that the reboot will be set in their “universe”, they’re no longer the main characters. Kristen Bell, however, will be returning to voice Gossip Girl!
You’ll be seeing a whole bunch of new faces, with a cast that includes names like Emily Alyn Lind, Jordan Alexander, Savannah Smith, and Thomas Doherty. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a good vampire series, don’t you think? In December 2020, HBO announced that a True Blood reboot is currently in the works. At present, they’re still in early stages of development, so not much information has been shared about it. All we know so far is that the original series creator, as well as those behind Riverdale and NOS4A2 will be among those working on this series reboot.
True Blood aired on HBO for seven seasons, from 2008 to 2014. Original cast members such as Anna Paquin, Alexander Skarsgard, and Stephen Moyer have yet to confirm whether or not they’ll be involved; some even speculate that they may introduce a whole new generation of actors for this version of the series. We’ll be staying tuned for updates!
Besides series reboots and revivals, 2021 and 2022 will also be seeing spinoffs of classic films — and a Grease spinoff series is one of them! Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will be a prequel to the 1978 film, so we’ll be seeing much of the original characters (although, obviously, played by a new set of actors). As evidenced by the title, the spinoff series will focus on the Pink Ladies and how Sandy, Rizzo, Marty, and Frenchy came together.
A list of cast members has yet to be revealed, but word is that the series will be premiering on the Paramount+ streaming service sometime in 2021. As for the vibe of the show, it may be safe to expect something à la Glee or High School Musical (Disney+ series version) — it’s going to be a musical romcom!
Iconic ’90s film Clueless is making a comeback in the form of yet another spinoff series. (Remember the Clueless sitcom that ran from 1996 to 1998?) This time, however, the series centres on Cher’s BFF, Dionne Davenport.
We’ve yet to hear news on the title of the spinoff series, but what we do know is the premise. In the upcoming series to be aired on Peacock (NBC’s streaming service), Cher goes missing and Dionne deals with the pressure of filling in her bestie’s shoes as the most popular girl in school, all while attempting to solve her friend’s disappearance. Some say the Clueless spinoff will be something like a cross between Pretty Little Liars, Riverdale, Gossip Girl, and even Big Little Lies!
News about this particular reboot first broke in 2019, however there are still no updates as to whether production is already underway. Still, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that this will make it to our screens by 2022 at the latest!
It’s been less than two years since Game of Thrones ended, but a spinoff series has actually been in the works since about 2016. After years of development, production for House of the Dragon will finally begin this year — and it’s set for release in 2022! HBO has announced that Matt Smith (The Crown, Doctor Who), Olivia Cookie (Ready Player One), and Emma D’Arcy (The Truth Seekers) will be starring in the series.
House of the Dragon will take place 300 years before Game of Thrones, focusing on the story of House Targaryen. If you’d like to get a feel of what the prequel series has in store for you, George R. R. Martin recommends picking up his anthologies Dangerous Women and Rogues, as well as his novel Fire & Blood.
Yes, you read that right — this Nickelodeon sitcom is getting a revival! Can you believe it’s almost been 10 years since iCarly’s series finale? Original stars Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor, and Nathan Kress are confirmed to return for the reboot on Paramount+. As of writing, Jennette McCurdy, who plays Carly’s BFF Sam, will not be making an appearance.
The series reboot will be set a decade after the original — which is fitting, since it’s expected to premiere by the end of 2021 or early 2022. Unsurprisingly, since the timeline jumps 10 years ahead, the iCarly revival will be targeted towards a more mature audience. (Totally reasonable, given that their original audience has aged along with the characters.) OG fans need not worry though; they can definitely expect the same sort of wackiness that the show is known for!
