Siquijor has always been one of those islands that spark curiosity. Known for its white sand beaches, waterfalls, and mystical reputation, it is a destination that blends nature with folklore. Recently, however, something unusual captured attention in San Juan. A large sinkhole suddenly appeared in a rice field in Sitio Pilapil, Barangay Napo.
The sinkhole formed in the middle of farmland and quickly became a talking point in the community. The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) responded by setting up barriers and warning signs around the site to make sure no one went too close.
On 26 September, officials revisited the area with barangay leaders to reassess the situation. Some residents suggested that the sinkhole could become a new attraction, considering Siquijor’s reputation for unique and mysterious natural features. However, local officials rejected the idea, stressing that safety must remain the top priority.
Mayor Wilfredo “Joey” Pal-ing explained that the municipal government is now evaluating which portions of the farmland are still safe for cultivation. Plans are also being considered to provide fair compensation or equal value to farmers whose livelihoods may be affected by the loss of land.

Authorities also visited nearby households to inform residents of possible risks. For now, the sinkhole is off limits and is not being developed as a tourist site.
For travellers, this incident is a reminder of how nature can dramatically shape the landscape of destinations like Siquijor. Despite the sinkhole, the island remains a must-visit place in the Philippines. From Cambugahay Falls to Salagdoong Beach and the relaxed seaside atmosphere of San Juan, there are still plenty of safe and breathtaking experiences waiting for visitors.
If you are planning a trip, you can enjoy everything that makes Siquijor special while remembering that local communities also face challenges from unexpected natural events. The island continues to welcome visitors with the same warmth and charm that has made it one of the Philippines’ most intriguing travel spots.
