A new airplane napping hack that's gone viral on TikTok and Instagram is raising concerns among health and safety experts. The hack, which involves lifting your feet off the floor, securing them with the seatbelt, and resting your head on your knees, has been widely shared and tested by travellers eager for a more comfortable flight experience. However, experts caution that this seemingly clever trick might not be as safe or effective as it appears.

The napping hack has garnered praise from some users who describe it as a “life-changing” method for catching some shut-eye on a long flight. Yet, experts are sounding the alarm over its potential risks. Jasmine Khadija, a seasoned flight attendant, warns that this position could be hazardous in the event of turbulence. “If there’s rough air, you could be jolted forward or up and down, increasing the risk of injury,” she explains. Moreover, in the event of an emergency evacuation, having seat belts and straps around your feet could create trip hazards, complicating a swift exit.
Health professionals are also critical of the hack. Dr. Chelsea Perry, a sleep specialist, points out that the position does not allow your body to fully relax. “It can lead to discomfort due to the awkward curvature of your spine and strain on your neck,” she notes. Dr. Perry also highlights potential circulation issues that could arise from maintaining this position for extended periods.
Cali Bahrenfuss, a clinical sleep health educator, adds to the concerns by explaining that resting your head on your knees can cause neck cramps, headaches, and even disrupt your airway. “Any slight turbulence may cause your head to bump your knees, potentially causing injury, and the forward head position can lead to snoring or difficulty breathing,” Bahrenfuss says.
Experts recommend sticking to a more conventional seating position during flights. Keeping your legs forward and slightly elevated, and adjusting your seat to a reclined position, can enhance comfort and circulation. Moving around and changing positions periodically is also encouraged to avoid discomfort and improve overall sleep quality.
Khadija also notes that flight attendants are likely to enforce proper seating positions. “We’ll advise passengers not to use this hack,” she says, highlighting that safety regulations may not accommodate such unconventional methods.

While the viral airplane napping hack may seem tempting, experts urge travellers to prioritise safety and comfort by adhering to recommended seating practices. Enjoying a restful flight is best achieved through standard, safer methods rather than risky, unverified hacks.
