Our favourite places to stay on this sleepy Cebu island.
Yes, you read that right. Flying to paradise might actually cost more than hopping on a plane to Japan. Roundtrip tickets to Siargao now hit P25,000 to P30,000, leaving travellers wondering: should I surf the waves or my wallet?
Here’s a tip for Filipino travellers: sometimes flying abroad might actually be cheaper than visiting our very own Siargao. Book early, compare fares, or explore other Southeast Asian destinations that won’t burn a hole in your pocket—your island dreams can still come true without emptying your bank account.
Even Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon is scratching his head. He’s meeting domestic airlines on August 26 to figure out why ticket prices are sky-high, especially with the holidays around the corner.

The meeting will bring together the Association of Air Carriers of the Philippines, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines. The goal? To see how fares can be made more wallet-friendly.
Here’s the thing, fuel surcharges have barely changed. Domestic flights this month sit between P117 and P342, yet a roundtrip to Siargao keeps climbing. So even though the skies are clear, your ticket price isn’t.
This isn’t the first time Dizon has raised eyebrows at pricey local flights. Back in June, AirAsia Move was fined P6 million for selling Tacloban tickets at around P39,000 per way. The airline fixed its system, but it shows how unpredictable local travel can be.

And let’s not forget the NAIA passenger service charge hike this September—P950 for international departures and P390 for domestic flights—to fund the airport’s P170-billion upgrade. Add to that carriers like Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines spending big to meet demand, and suddenly a weekend in paradise feels like a luxury trip.
Picture yourself surfing in crystal-blue waters, coconut trees swaying, and the sun kissing your skin… but then reality hits when you check your bank app. Don’t worry, your island dreams are still alive! Just plan smarter and maybe pack an extra P for that epic beachfront stay.
Siargao will always be paradise, but right now, it’s also one of the priciest escapes in the Philippines. Filipino Gen Z and Millennials, dream big, plan smart, and keep your wallet happy while chasing that perfect surf. Because paradise is worth it—but only if you fly wisely.
