Jeepney Fares Officially Go Up This Thursday

Finding the exact change for your morning commute is about to get a bit more stressful. If you usually reach into your pocket for a 13-peso coin for a traditional jeepney ride, you will need to add one more peso starting this week. The Department of Transportation has officially confirmed that fares are increasing for both traditional and modern jeepneys across the country.

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez announced the change on Tuesday morning. He explained that the decision comes after a recent spike in fuel prices caused by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This price hike is not just limited to jeepneys. The government has also approved higher rates for provincial buses, metro buses, point-to-point (P2P) buses, and even airport taxis.

The price you pay depends on what type of vehicle you board. For those using traditional jeepneys, the base fare for the first four kilometres is now P14.00. This is a permanent increase from the previous P13.00 rate. Modern jeepneys will see a higher jump of P2.00.

To give you a better idea of the daily cost, the transport department shared a specific example for longer routes. A trip from Cubao to Divisoria covers about 10 kilometres. Previously, this commute cost P23.00. With the new rates, you will now have to pay P25.00 for that same distance.

Cash assistance and fuel subsidy for PUV drivers

While commuters will feel the pinch at the terminal, the government is also looking at the struggle of the people behind the wheel. The increase in pump prices has made it difficult for drivers to take home enough money for their families. Because of this, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the release of P5,000 in cash assistance for public utility vehicle drivers to help them handle the rising cost of fuel.

These changes go into effect on Thursday, March 19. It is best to check your usual routes now and ensure you have the correct coins ready to avoid any arguments or delays during the rush hour.
