Clark International Airport Underground Train Nears Completion in 2025

Looks like traffic woes en route to the airport will soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the upcoming Clark International Airport underground train station (UPDATED). The station will be part of the North–South Commuter Railway’s PNR Clark Phase 2, described by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) as “the country’s first-ever airport railway express service.”

Clark International Airport (CRK) in Mabalacat, Pampanga opened its new terminal in 2021 as part of an ongoing expansion plan to accommodate more passengers. With a train station in the works and major progress on the railway project, it’s only a matter of time before CRK becomes even more accessible to Filipino travellers.

About the station

This new underground station will rise right in front of Clark International Airport. The project is under the PNR Clark Phase 2 segment, which spans 53 km from Malolos, Bulacan to Clark, Pampanga and includes six stations: Calumpit, Apalit, San Fernando, Angeles, Clark, and CRK.

As of January 2025, the PNR Clark Phase 2 project is nearing 70% completion, according to the DOTr. Once finished, the railway will link Metro Manila to Clark in just around an hour, compared to the current two-to-three-hour bus ride.

Aside from cutting travel time, the project is also expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 60,000 tons annually and generate thousands of jobs for local workers, OFWs, and those in the transport sector affected by previous economic challenges.

Other local railway projects

Meanwhile, PNR Clark Phase 1 — connecting Malolos and Tutuban, Manila — continues to make steady progress. The third phase of the North–South Commuter Railway will eventually link Tutuban to Calamba, Laguna, completing the Luzon-wide train network. Together, these projects aim to transform intercity travel, utilising both modern and historic Philippine National Railway stations.

Oh, and did you know? Clark International Airport was previously recognised as one of the finalists for the Prix Versailles Architecture and Design Awards under the Airport category — highlighting its modern design and strong connection to Pampanga’s cultural heritage.

With the Clark airport train line expected to be completed by mid-2025, travellers can soon look forward to faster, smoother, and more scenic journeys between Metro Manila and Pampanga.
