EDSA Busway Rehabilitation Starts with Four Key Stations

Travellers along EDSA are starting to see changes on the busway as the Department of Transportation or DOTr begins Phase 1 of its station rehabilitation project. The works started on Monday, 11 August 2025 and aim to make commuting in Metro Manila safer, more comfortable and more accessible for everyone.

This first phase covers four stations, namely Monumento, Bagong Barrio, North Avenue and Guadalupe. North Avenue Station will serve as the model for how the other stations will be improved.

Why the Upgrade Matters

For regular busway riders, the need for upgrades has been clear for a long time. At North Avenue, one of the three lifts is not working which is a big challenge for elderly passengers, people with disabilities and anyone carrying heavy bags. At Monumento, poor lighting makes it hard to read signs and passengers still have to climb stairs to reach the platform.

On the first day of the rehabilitation works, commuters shared their experiences. A passenger with mobility issues said that having an escalator or a fully working lift would make a huge difference for people with disabilities and senior citizens. Others mentioned how tiring it is to carry luggage up the stairs and how long queues make travel more stressful.

The Bigger Plan

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said that the agency plans to improve seven stations in total this year which includes three brand new ones. However, the budget for 2025 was reduced so the team is focusing on making the most of available resources.

The DOTr is also planning to build new busway stations in Cubao in Quezon City and at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange or PITX. These will help daily commuters as well as those travelling across Metro Manila for trips and errands.

What This Means for Travellers

If you take the EDSA Busway to work, school or leisure trips, these upgrades will hopefully make the ride more pleasant. Better lighting, functional lifts and easier access will be a win for everyone. For travellers heading to the airport, going on a weekend getaway or just exploring the city, the changes could make public transport a more reliable choice.

While there may be some inconvenience during the construction period, the long term improvements are worth looking forward to. A safer and more commuter friendly EDSA Busway could be a small but important step towards making Metro Manila travel less stressful and a bit more enjoyable.
